Press Release Summary: Information sharing, a joint task force, and collaboration among all local law enforcement agencies is a means to fighting crime at its root, improved crime analysis and criminal intelligence, and more effective identification of crime patterns and trends.
Press Release Body: TALLAHASSEE, FL, August 15, 2008 - In these times of budget shortfall, local law enforcement agencies throughout Leon County has to do more with less. Rather than allow budget shortfalls to affect crime solving capabilities in Leon County, it has become increasingly important to foster teamwork and cooperation among all local law enforcement agencies including the Leon County Sheriff's Office (LCSO), Tallahassee Police Department (TPD), and FAMU and FSU police. As candidate for Leon County Sheriff, Tommy Mills advocates collaboration as a solution to improved crime solving capabilities.
It is no surprise that the escalating crime rate is an issue in Leon County regardless of the type and magnitude of the crime evident from the recent brash in car burglaries to robberies and drug crimes. However, little cooperation exists between local law enforcement agencies, ultimately resulting in each agency working independently. This current structure is inefficient and is not proactive in addressing the escalating crime rate. Once elected as Leon County Sheriff, Tommy Mills will focus his efforts on uniting local law enforcement agencies to find synergies where they can collaborate and share information, resources, and expertise. His solution to fighting crime at its root is to implement information sharing among all agencies as a means to improved crime analysis and criminal intelligence and to identify crime trends and patterns. A more efficient system in place that utilizes crime data from all local law enforcement agencies will help LCSO to indentify "hot spots" throughout the county as well as growing crime trends and to allocate its current resources where most needed. Mills also advocates implementing a joint task force, standardized training, and cost sharing for more effective and efficient law enforcement operations across the county. The citizens of Leon County have come to expect a high quality of life and safe communities, which is being challenged with increased crime activity. While the current crime rate pales in comparison to other counties throughout the state plagued with crime, it is even more important to implement innovative solutions at the present moment to attack the crime that we do have and preserve the county from ever being infested with crime.
